Last words are very important…

A message for Lent 2025

By Rev Stewart

We have just finished the first session of our Lent Course for 2025. We are looking at the last words of Jesus on the Cross.

Last words can be very important. What would you like your last words to be to your loved ones, to your friends, or to the world?

Jesus’ last words sum up many of themes of his earthly ministry – forgiveness, service, the sovereignty of God and His amazing love and protection.

Last words of Jesus

We have been exploring what it means to be a disciple of Jesus over the last weeks in church. Lent provides us with another spur to deepen our discipleship with Him.

Do our lives express the same themes of forgiveness, service etc. that Jesus’ did?

I am sure we can all recognise that we are still disciples-in-progress! We often fall short. We often fail to make the mark. Sin still lingers.

But be assured of the words of scripture that “while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

Jesus’ redeeming work on the cross is for all of us. Just as Jesus’ last words at the crucifixion were not his last words (because of the glorious fact of the Resurrection), so the cross means that we do not need to worry about our last words.

There is ultimate meaning and acceptance in Jesus. He died that sin and death should have no power over us. Someone living in that liberating fact is a true disciple of Jesus!
